In Germany it prevails the continental climate characterised by long, snowy and cold winters and cool summers (16°C in Hamburg). Sometimes rivers ice for several days in the year: in the northern part of the country the icing days last for 70 days, but temperatures sometimes suddenly decrease icing lakes, too. By the North Sea there are very frequent fogs all year round. The climate is warmer in the areas next to the mountains: in January in Colony temperatures can decrease up to 2°C and summers are hot even though there are frequent thunderstorms. The Fohn's hot wind blows in spring in the southern valleys mitigating the climate.
